Regeneration of Scania injectors - what are the differences between XPI and HPI systems?
Scania is one of the leading truck manufacturers in the world. The engines of this brand - especially the DC9, DC13 and DC16 series - are equipped with advanced fuel injection systems which, with proper maintenance and regular regeneration, can operate for hundreds of thousands of kilometers without serious failures. In Poland and Silesia, A-Core Diesel Serwis is one of the few plants with experience in bothXPI (Scania-Cummins High Pressure Injection) systems and the olderHPI (High Pressure Injection)system.
XPI is the latest generation Common Rail used since 2009 in Euro 5 and Euro 6 engines. The system operates at a pressure of up to 2500 bar, which requires exceptional precision during regeneration. HPI - the predecessor of XPI - is a unit injector, where the pump and the injector are one element. Both systems require specialized equipment and experience.
The most common symptoms of Scania injector damage
Damage to injectors in Scania trucks manifests itself gradually - usually the first symptoms appear between 400,000 and 700,000 km of mileage. Ignoring early symptoms leads to damage to the cylinder head, fuel rails and high pressure pump - repairs that are many times more expensive than regenerating the injectors themselves.
Symptoms of XPI / HPI Scania injectors failure
- Black or gray smoke from the exhaust pipe when accelerating
- Uneven engine operation (vibration at idle speed)
- Clear loss of power - the vehicle does not achieve the declared power
- Fuel consumption increased by 10-20% for no apparent reason
- Difficulty starting, especially when cold
- Error codes in the Scania SDP3 / TECU diagnostic system
- The characteristic clatter of injectors audible from outside
- Smell of burnt fuel in the cabin or engine compartment
Scania SDP3 error codes indicating injectors
| Error code | Description | Applies to |
|---|---|---|
| MID128 PID51 | Fuel pressure too low - XPI rail | XPI |
| MID128 PPID400 | Injector cyl. 1 – internal leakage | XPI/HPI |
| MID128 PPID401–405 | Injectors cyl. 2–6 – leakage | XPI/HPI |
| MID128 SID1–6 | No injector control signal | XPI/HPI |
| MID128 PID94 | Fuel pressure out of range | XPI |
| MID128 PPID47 | Injection time out of range - cylinder 1-6 | XPI |
Scania injector regeneration process step by step
Regeneration of Scania injectors is a complex, multi-stage process, which at A-Core Diesel Serwis follows a strictly defined procedure. Each injector is treated individually - no "repair kits from Allegro", no shortcuts.
Stage 1 – Initial diagnostics and reading error codes
Each set of injectors accepted for service is first connected to our diagnostic computer system. We read error codes and measure initial operating parameters (injection time, internal pressure, return leakage). This allows you to precisely assess which injector is the main culprit of the problem.
Stage 2 – Test on the Bosch EPS 815 test bench
Before disassembly, each injector is tested on the Bosch EPS 815 test bench - one of the most accurate devices for testing Common Rail injectors available on the market. We measure:
- Injection dose at various pressures (from 300 to 2200 bar)
- Pilot injection dose and main injection dose
- Internal leakage (back-leak)
- Spire opening time
- Departures from Scania nominal values
Stage 3 – Disassembly and inspection of components
After the test, the injector is disassembled in a clean room. We check the status:
- Needle pins and needle guides (tolerance <1 μm)
- Control valve
- Injector body and nozzle seat
- Internal seals and filters
- Calibration spacers
Stage 4 – Replacing worn components
We only replace damaged or worn-out elements. We use original Bosch/Delphi parts or certified OEM replacements. We never use cheap substitutes from unknown sources - at a pressure of 2,500 bar, each component must meet precise production standards.
Step 5 – Calibration and adjustment
After assembly, the injector is adjusted and calibrated. We select spacer washers with an accuracy ofto 1 μm so that the injection parameters are consistent with Scania's factory values. This is the stage that determines the quality of regeneration.
Stage 6 – Final test on the Bosch EPS 815 table
Each remanufactured injector is tested again on a test bench. A printout of the test report is attached to the service documentation and issued to the customer. The injector is only accepted if all parameters are within tolerance of ±2% from the nominal values.

How much does it cost to regenerate a Scania injector?
The cost of regenerating one Scania XPI or HPI injector depends on the degree of wear and necessary replacement of components. Approximate price ranges for A-Core Diesel Serwis services:
| Service | XPI (Common Rail) | HPI (Unit Injector) |
|---|---|---|
| Diagnostics and test on the table (1 pc.) | from PLN 120 net | from PLN 120 net |
| Comprehensive regeneration (1 piece) | from PLN 450 net | from PLN 550 net |
| Regeneration of a set of 6 pieces | from PLN 2,400 net | from PLN 2,900 net |

Regeneration vs. replacement with new ones – which is more profitable?
The new Scania XPI injector costs from PLN 2,500 to PLN 4,500 net per unit at the official dealership. With a 6-cylinder engine, the cost is about PLN 15,000-27,000 net only for parts. You need to add labor, calibration codes and vehicle downtime.
Regeneration of a comprehensive set of 6 XPI injectors in A-Core costs from PLN 2,400 to PLN 3,600 net - several times less. With proper regeneration and installation, regenerated injectors work as long as new ones - at A-Core we provide a 12-month warranty for each regeneration.

Frequently asked questions - FAQ
Can Scania XPI injectors be regenerated multiple times?
Yes, with proper operation and regular replacement of fuel filters, XPI injectors can be regenerated 2-3 times throughout the vehicle's life cycle. The key is to use clean fuel and high-quality filters.
How long does it take to regenerate a set of 6 injectors?
Standard delivery time is 3-5 business days from delivery of the injectors. In the case of damage requiring the import of rare parts, the time may be extended to 7-10 days - we always inform the customer about this before starting the work.
Is it necessary to program the injectors in the vehicle's computer after regeneration?
Scania XPI injectors have individual calibration codes (IMA/C3I). After regeneration, these codes may change - we recommend verification and possible reprogramming using Scania SDP3 or VCI2. At A-Core, we inform the customer if the codes require updating after regeneration.
Do you accept injectors from other truck brands?
Yes - in addition to Scania, we service injectors from MAN (CP4, CP2), Volvo D13, DAF XF/CF, Mercedes OM471/OM473, Iveco Cursor and injectors from commercial and passenger vehicles.
What causes faster wear of Scania injectors?
The main causes are: poor quality fuel with impurities (water, mechanical impurities), infrequent replacement of fuel filters, operation of the engine in continuous short journeys, and in the case of HPI - incorrect pressure of the oil lubricating the system.
Can I send the injectors by courier?
Yes. We pack and ship every day. The injectors should be secured in the original or replacement packaging, with a description of the vehicle model and catalog number. Before shipping, please contact us by phone: +48 504 511 170.
